“Let her pick it up herself.” When in the presence of a person with a disability, allow them to do what they can for themselves.
When I was in elementary school, a physical therapist helped me learn something about disability that I carry with me. It's a bit of a long story so I won't go into that right now. My takeaway from it was everyone has challenges some are just more easily seen than others. Having a physical disability and drawing this conclusion as a child has had a lasting impact. Challenges come in a variety of different packages. Some are invisible and visible disabilities while others have nothing to do with disability at all yet are still challenges.
